Easy to illustrate, and is not uncommon

I like this one because it's simple to illustrate, the protagonist is clear (the preceptor) and it's a situation that arises not infrequently. 

It might even be possible to endow both characters with empathic consciousness in the more-skilled vignette: we could show the preceptor delivering the news more empathically, and the resident receiving the news with more empathy for self and other.
