CONCERNED COLLEAGUE is sitting at her desk writing notes.  PHYSICIAN enters the room with a cup of coffee, bedraggled and exhausted.

CONCERNED COLLEAGUE tried to talk to PHYSICIAN, mentioning that she's been noticing that he has been looking really exhusted lately, and that she's been concerned for a while, and wonders if everything is ok.

PHYSICIAN at first get a little bit defensive and then just "laughs it off", which the CONCERNED COLLEAGUE reads as apathy and denial.

The conversation doesn't lead to any real solutions or a way to move foreward.

INT. SHARED OFFICE, LATE IN THE DAY.

Hi there Jim, how are you doing?

physician

(sits down on couch)

Oh hi Peter, you know - same old, same old.  I just finished a (complex procedure) and I was in there with Darcy(name of mutual nursing colleague)...

(closes eyes and puts head back)

CONCERNED COLLEAGUE

Gosh, you look really exhausted.  are you ok?

Physician

Oh yeah, just a little tired.

CONCERNED COLLEAGUE

You've been tired a lot lately, hey? Have you been getting enough sleep?

Physician

(Sitting up)

What are you insituating here?

concerned colleague

Oh, Jim, you know that I really respect your work - I feel you are an excellent doctor.  But... I've been feeling a little concerned about your health lately and wondering if you might need some help.

physician

(chuckles, then sighs)

Look I appreciate your concern Pete.  But you we both know that it's been a really busy time here since the restucturing (or some other event, like department cuts).  Hey, "C'est la vie, right?"

(Laughs, finishes coffee, stands to leave)

See you in the battle field...

Two scripts about concerned colleagues

Since we have two different scenarios about concerned colleagues, we are able (if we choose to) explore two different possible reactions.

For example in this script we could have the colleague just "laugh it off" or exhibit a kind of "light-hearted denial" and in the other script (Physician addresses worrisome behaviour with his physician colleague) we could explore more of a defensive, angry reaction. (or vice-versa).
