Is the Physician Health Program of BC an office of the BC Medical Association?

No. The role of the Physician Health Program of British Columbia (PHPBC) is to provide advocacy and support for physicians, including those in training and their families who are experiencing problems related to personal and family emotional health issues, the inappropriate use of alcohol and/or drugs or coping with physical illness.

The BC Medical Association (BCMA) on the other hand strives to promote a social, economic and political climate in which its members can provide the citizens of British Columbia with the highest standard of health care, while achieving maximum satisfaction and fair economic reward.

The PHPBC and the BCMA have different mandates and philosophies. The PHPBC is grateful to receive funding towards the cost of the program from the BC Medical Association, but operates independantly of the BCMA.
