We provide confidential, discreet help for BC medical students licensed in BC. We offer support, referrals and counselling for a wide range of problems including physician and mental health issues, substance use disorders, career and life transitions, relationship stress, financial issues, professional support and referrals, and concern for colleagues.
24/7 confidential helpline
Call our 24-hour helpline and you’ll immediately be connected with a licensed clinical counsellor. We provide intake services and crisis counselling for medical students at any stage of their training.
Help from a trusted colleague
Access direct, one-on-one help for personal or professional issues. Whether you’re dealing with a complaint, a negative clinical outcome, workload issues or any other challenge, you’ll receive confidential support from a trusted colleague.
Help for a medical colleague
How can you help a colleague in distress? It’s not always easy to choose the right approach. If you are concerned about a physician, resident doctor, or another medical student, please contact us. We will plan and coordinate a series of confidential steps to ensure your colleague receives the help they need.
Transitioning back to work
Returning to work, classes and medical training after an illness or prolonged absence is not always a simple process. We provide coaching, planning, and strategic follow-up support to promote a safe and seamless transition.
Comprehensive health assessment
As medical students it is easy for us to be focused on our training while delaying our own self-care. When we finally do ask for help, things can be serious and urgent. No matter how late you might have left things, we are here to help you. We will ensure you get the care you need in a timely way, keeping yourself and your patients safe.
Short-term counselling and coaching
Through us you have access to our province-wide network of clinical, vocational, financial, and other counsellors who can provide the short-term help you need. Our network includes both generalists and specialists in a number of areas, all of whom have experience in helping medical students.
Referrals to specialized coaches and therapists
We can also help you to find a specialized coach, counsellor or therapist who can address your specific challenges. These professionals operate outside of the Physician Health Program, and are not affiliated with our contracted and credentialed network.
Connection to a family physician
It can be tempting to diagnose and treat yourself, in the mistaken belief that your colleagues should save their precious time for those in greater need. But we’re all familiar with William Osler’s famous advice to the contrary. Having a solid relationship with a family physician of your own is an essential component of professional practice in medicine. We can connect you with a trusted colleague.
