We provide discreet, private support through our experienced program physicians and/or our extensive network of counsellors, therapists and coaches. Any information you share with us is held in the strictest confidence. We can help with a wide range of issues, including substance use, mental health, relationship stress, career and life transitions, financial issues, peer support, workplace relationships, and concern for colleagues.
24/7 confidential helpline
Call our 24-hour, confidential helpline and you’ll be connected immediately with a licensed clinical counsellor. We provide intake assessments and crisis counselling for callers any time of day or night.
Help from a fellow physician
Access direct, physician-to-physician help with personal or professional issues. Whether you’re dealing with a complaint, a negative clinical outcome, workload stress, or any other challenge, you’ll receive confidential support from a trusted physician colleague.
Help for your physician colleague
How can you help a colleague who might be in distress? It’s not always easy to choose the right approach. If you are concerned about another physician, resident or medical student, please call our 24/7 helpline at 1-800-663-6729. We will plan and coordinate with you a series of confidential steps to ensure your colleague receives any help they might need.
Strengthening professional relationships
A workplace that is both physically and psychologically safe is critical for optimal patient care – and it directly affects your own wellbeing. We offer a range of services to help you enhance professional relationships, improve communication practices, and strengthen your mental and emotional resiliency at work.
Transitioning back to work
Returning to work after an illness or prolonged absence is seldom a simple process. We provide coaching, planning, and follow-up support to help you make a transition that both enhances your recovery and ensures the safety of patients.
Comprehensive health assessment
As physicians it is easy for us to take good care of our patients while delaying our own self-care. When we finally do ask for help, things can be serious and urgent. No matter how late you might have left things, we are here to help you. We will ensure you get the care you need in a timely way, keeping yourself and your patients safe.
Short-term counselling and coaching
Through us you have access to our province-wide network of clinical, vocational, financial, and other counsellors who can provide the short-term help you need. Our network includes both generalists and specialists in a number of areas, all of whom have experience in helping physicians.
Referrals to specialized coaches and therapists
We can also help you to find a specialized coach, counsellor or therapist who can address your specific challenges. These professionals operate outside of the Physician Health Program, and are not affiliated with our contracted and credentialed network.
Connection to a family physician
It can be tempting to diagnose and treat yourself, in the mistaken belief that your colleagues should save their precious time for those in greater need. But we’re all familiar with William Osler’s famous advice to the contrary. Having a solid relationship with a family physician of your own is an essential component of professional practice in medicine. We can connect you with a trusted colleague.
